The difference between Upper and Lower Egypt is social, cultural and geographical. Lower Egypt is mainly made up of the Nile Delta, while Upper Egypt is the country further south. The border between the regions is usually considered to be at a latitude of 30 degrees north.
The political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt is normally attributed to King Menes in 2925 B.C. He merged the two states by declaring himself to be the kng of Upper and Lower Egypt. However, Egypt is still often spoken about as two parts, mainly because of the marked differences in habitation. Lower Egypt is a heavily populated land of fertile soils, while Upper Egypt is mainly desert country with a low population.
