Are termites the same thing as flying ants, or are they different?

Termites and flying ants are two completely different types of insects, although they may look similar. Upon closer inspection, the two insect species vary greatly in appearance and behavior.
The main visual difference between winged ants and termites are the shape of the bodies. A termite's body has a straight waist and antennae, while flying ants have bent antennae and pinched waists. Both species have two sets of wings, but while those of flying ants point upward toward the ant's head, the termite's wings spread downward.
Another way to differentiate between the two is behavior. Termites swarm in the early spring, while ants swarm throughout the year.
