The six possible judgements rendered in a civil case are judgement on the merits, summary judgment, judgement notwithstanding the verdict, consent judgement, default judgement and deficiency judgement, according to USLegal. The type of judgement is based on the process the court used to make the final decision.

A valid judgement terminates the lawsuit and resolves all contested issues, states USLegal. It is the court's official pronouncement of who wins the case and what the winner is awarded. All judgements must be in writing and must clearly indicate that all issues have been adjudicated. All judgements must be dated and docketed, either electronically or in a docket book, with the court administrator's office.
