Some common types of educational tests include summative, formative, interim and survey tests. Testing can be either informal, such as a review game a teacher gives the class, or formal, such as a standardized test like the ACT or SAT.
Summative tests are designed to find out if a student has learned a large amount of information over a period of time, and a class's final examination or standardized tests like the ACT or SAT are examples.
Formative tests, on the other hand, cover new material students have learned over a shorter period of time, and they may include quizzes or class discussions.
Interim tests cover an amount of material that falls between that covered by a summative or formative test, and some examples may include chapter tests or projects.
Survey tests differ from these three in that they focus on general comprehension. A learning styles inventory would be an example of a survey test.
