Tiger-tail, long-snouted, Pacific and Pontoh's pygmy are among the 54 recognized types of seahorse. Seahorses live in seagrass beds, coral reefs, estuaries and mangroves in shallow and temperate waters between 45 degrees south and 45 degrees north.

The newest seahorse species, Pontoh's pygmy, was officially named in 2008. These seahorses are orange or yellow and reach 3/4 inch in length at maturity. Researchers accidentally discovered this species on a captive coral reef. These seahorses have prehensile tails so they can attach to coral reefs, and they live in the shallow waters of the western Pacific Ocean from southern Japan to northern Australia.
