Window air conditioning units only come in one type, called a unitary system; however, they do come in many output sizes, ranging from 5,000 to 28,500 Btus. Unitary systems have all air conditioning parts, including compressor, condenser, coils and evaporator, in one unit.

The unit is place through a hole in the wall, generally a window, where it vents cold air out of the front into the room while expelling the warm air created in the process outside. Electrical requirements vary with unit size, ranging from 110 volts to 220 volts. 6,000-Btu units are designed to cool between 150 and 250 square-foot sized rooms, while the largest units can cool up to 2,000 square feet.
