What are the disadvantages of installing a roof ridge vent?

Ridge roof vent installation costs more than the installation of smaller vents. Roof ridge vent installation also requires removal of large pieces of the roof sheathing.

Ridge vents don't work as well on roofs with only small ridge lengths. A long, continuous ridge vent is necessary for air circulation. These vents are not very effective without soffit vents or if existing soffit vents are blocked. Because ridge vents are long with lots of open spaces, it may be possible for wind-blown rain or snow to enter the holes. Angled or curved channels in the ridge vents help prevent the moisture from entering the attic space.
