What are disadvantages of sodium ascorbate?

The primary disadvantage of sodium ascorbate is the high dose of sodium it delivers; a 1000-milligram dose of sodium ascorbate contains 110 milligrams of sodium. This makes other forms of vitamin C preferable for patients on low-sodium diets.

Mineral ascorbates such as sodium ascorbate are preferred when other vitamin C supplements cause digestive distress. These are less acidic than other forms of vitamin C, making them less irritating to the digestive tract.

Calcium ascorbate and potassium ascorbate are popular alternatives for individuals on low-sodium diets. Unbuffered ascorbic acid and bioflavonoids are sodium-free alternatives, but these are more acidic than sodium ascorbate and can irritate the stomach.
