Coronary artery disease can affect the left anterior descending artery, according to HeartSite.com. Coronary artery disease occurs when plaque builds up in the walls of the coronary arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of blood clots and heart attacks.
Athersclerosis is the accumulation of plaque in the arteries, explains WebMD. In addition to narrowing the arteries, plaque increases the rigidity of the once-flexible arteries. Blood flow restriction results in less oxygen and vital nutrients delivered to the heart. Plaque secretes a sticky substance that promotes healing but causes other substances, such as calcium and inflammatory cells, to stick to the artery walls.
