Diverticulitis surgery is the removal of the diseased part of the colon. This surgery may be necessary if a person has repeated attacks of diverticulitis, high risk of repeated attacks or an abnormal opening between the colon and another organ, according to WebMD.
Diverticulitis surgery may also be necessary if an infected pouch exists in the colon that has ruptured into the abdomen or if the infection has spread into the abdominal cavity. A blocked colon may also require surgery. Problems with bleeding or an infection that spread through the blood to other parts of the body may necessitate this surgery, explains WebMD.
