DMAE refers to deanol, a chemical that is found throughout the body, specifically in the brain. It is also a form of medication used to treat a number of different disorders by assisting in communication between nerve cells.
Examples of disorders that DMAE can be used to treat include Alzheimer's disease, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. DMAE can also be used to treat tardive dyskinesia and to improve the memory, mood and some behaviors. Athletes sometimes use it to increase oxygen efficiency and muscle reflexes. People also apply DMAE to the skin as a method of reducing various signs of aging, specifically sagging skin.
