Does dog saliva heal cuts?

The saliva in a dog's mouth is thought to contain some antibiotic properties, but experts caution that microbes can still be transmitted from wound licking. PetMD concedes that while wound licking may occasionally aid healing, it loses its beneficial properties once the wound has been properly cleaned and dressed.

Saliva does contain some antibacterial properties, but they caution that continued licking will only contaminate the wound. This can cause infection especially to surgical incisions. PetMD advises using deterrents such as a bulky collar that prevents the dog from turning to reach its injuries, or sprays applied lightly to the bandage to discouraging licking.
