Do dogs have whiskers?

Like most mammals, dogs have whiskers. Also known as vibrissae, whiskers provide sensory information. They are extremely sensitive to touch and can pick up information from air currents as well as direct contact with objects.

Whiskers are long, stiff hairs found around the muzzle and sometimes above the eyes. They are more deeply rooted than other hairs and have nerve endings at their bases. Their sensitivity to air currents helps a dog navigate even in the dark, as a change in air movement can reveal the presence of a solid object or wall. Whiskers around the eye also provide some protection against objects such as grass blades that might otherwise poke the eye.
