What is a drip edge?

By Forinfos - 08/06/2025 - 0 comments

A drip edge is a horizontal building element designed to control the direction of dripping water to protect the underlying building components. It is the leading edge of a flashing, sill or overhang.

Some common drip edge locations are window sills, window head flashings and roof edges. The drip edges can reduce moisture-related issues such as ice defrosting on stonework, staining of the cladding and potential long term erosion of historical materials by defection rainwater from the exterior surface of a wall assembly. Some common drip edge profiles are metal flashing with 45-degree bends and metal flashing with 90-degree bends.
