What is a dryer outlet adapter?

Dryer outlet adapters do not exist. A homeowner who has four-prong outlet and a dryer with a three-prong cord must convert to a four-prong dryer cord. If the homeowner has a three-prong outlet and a four-prong dryer cord, he may update the outlet or change the cord.

According to the National Electric Code, all homes built after 2000 must have four-prong outlets installed. This code also prohibits homeowners from converting four-prong outlets to three-prong outlets, but it allows the dryer cord to be changed to fit the outlet. Using a few household tools, most homeowners are able to change a dryer cord easily. It is best to consult a licensed electrician to update an outlet.
