Multifocal, monofocal and toric intraocular lenses are all considered during cataract surgery, claims WebMD. Each of these lens types serves a different purpose in aiding vision.
Multifocal lenses are also called accommodative IOLs, as WebMD explains. They help the patient see both near and at a distance.
Monofocal IOLs are made for either near vision or distance vision, notes WebMD. Most patients and doctors choose monofocal IOLs for distance vision, and the patient wears glasses for near vision. In some patients who are having cataracts removed in both eyes, a monofocal for distance is used in one eye, and a monofocal for near vision is used in the other.
Toric IOLs are made to correct astigmatism, according to WebMD. They tend to be more expensive than monofocal lenses.
