Botox is prepared from the bacteria that causes botulism, according to Drugs.com. The botulinum toxin temporarily reduces muscle activity by blocking nerve activity occurring in the muscles.
Botox is commonly used to temporarily reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. Botox has numerous other medical uses, however. It is used to treat severe muscle spasms in the arms, neck and hands and severe sweating in the armpits. The incontinence that nerve disorders cause can also be treated with Botox. According to Drugs.com, the drug is capable of preventing chronic migraine headaches in adults. Botox is not safe for individuals allergic to the toxin or those with a local infection at the point of injection.
