There is no particular treatment of infection with E. coli bacteria other than management of its complications, which include diarrhea and dehydration. The infection is treated with rest and plenty of fluids, claims WebMD.
An E. coli infection results in water loss through vomiting and diarrhea, explains WebMD, and it may result in problems with the kidneys or blood. Antibiotics are not recommended for management of diarrhea as they slow down the digestive system, increasing the risk of other complications, including hemolytic uremic syndrome, according to Mayo Clinic. When the infection has already caused this syndrome, treatment includes kidney dialysis, blood transfusion and IV fluids.
