Taxpayers can claim a federal income tax credit of 10 percent of the cost of qualified energy-efficient improvements, including exterior windows, according to the IRS’s website. The maximum credit for windows is $200, the IRS notes.
The IRS notes that the cost of installing windows is not included in the credit calculation. To qualify for the credit, windows must meet ENERGY STAR program requirements, be installed in a taxpayer’s primary residence and be installed between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2014, according to the
ENERGY STAR website. ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency voluntary program designed to foster energy efficiency.
