What is an ebook?

An e-book is a book that is published electronically. Some e-books are only published digitally, while others are digital versions of print books. E-books may be less expensive than paper books and can be purchased almost instantly.

Some e-books are published in proprietary formats that can only be read on branded e-readers, while others are published in more open formats. Popular retailers included Amazon, Google, Apple and Barnes and Noble. E-books only comprise a fraction of the publishing market, but they are gaining popularity as of 2014. Critics warn that e-books are raising the price of print books and that they may price traditional book retailers out of the market completely.
