To be an embalmer, a person must have a high school diploma and finish mortuary college or hold a degree in mortuary science. The educational requirements may vary by state in the United States.
Depending on the state, the embalmer may need to pass a national certification exam. Other states require that embalmers pursue continuing education throughout their career to achieve additional credits. Before an embalmer can work full-time within the career, they may also have to serve an apprenticeship. In Florida, they must do an apprenticeship one year after school, while Kentucky requires that embalmers do three consecutive years of apprenticeship.
