The minimum educational requirement to become a diplomat is a high school diploma. A degree is not necessary, but having one vastly improves the chance of being hired. If you are interested in becoming a diplomat, you should choose a career track within the U.S. Foreign Service.
To become a diplomat, register and take the Foreign Service Officer Test. If you succeed at this test and satisfy additional hiring requirements, you may be hired based on the needs of the departments to which you applied. Applicants must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 20 and 59. Speaking a foreign language can also improve your chances of getting hired.
