An animal that starts with the letter "N" is a nine-banded armadillo. This species of armadillo is found in certain regions throughout the United States, including the southwest.

The nine-banded armadillo prefers warmer climates, and it tries to remain close to bodies of waters such as streams and creeks. They are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for several minutes when they need to. The armadillos feed on small insects, reptiles and bird eggs. When they are not tracking down sources of food, the animals build burrows. Once they leave the burrow, however, they rarely return and move on to make new ones.
