What is Singapore Math?

Singapore Math is a teaching strategy that encourages students to come together and problem solve using a hands-on approach. According to About.com, "The program has a unique framework with a focus on building problem-solving skills and an in-depth understanding of essential math skills."

First brought to the United States by Jeff and Dawn Thomas, Singapore Math has been used in Southeast Asia since 1982. Singapore Math differs from the traditional approaches of teacher-centered learning. Instead of having a teacher demonstrate the recommended steps for reaching a solution, students are given tangible aids to help them complete the problem themselves. Because of its focus on problem-solving skills, Singapore Math is widely used in American schools.
