Treat a dog infested with ticks by first removing the ticks, cleaning the dog’s skin with an antiseptic, and watching the dog for symptoms of tick-borne illness, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Use flea-and-tick control products to prevent reinfestation of the dog.
To remove ticks from the dog’s skin, use gloved hands and a clean pair of tweezers to grasp the tick as close as possible to the dog’s skin, advises the Humane Society. Pull the tick outward, using a steady motion. Retain the tick in a jar of alcohol to allow the veterinarian to identify the tick species if the dog becomes ill later.
