What are the effects of Nextel Cup points on NASCAR standings?

NASCAR's Nextel Cup was renamed the Sprint Cup Series in 2008 after Sprint purchased Nextel. Placement in the NASCAR Chase for the Cup postseason series is based on points awarded in its Sprint Cup races.

Individual race winners receive 43 points under a scoring system that began in 2011. To encourage drivers to win, winners receive bonuses of three points for winning and one point for leading a lap. One bonus point is awarded to the driver who led the most laps. Scoring is reduced by one point for each place below the winner until the 43rd-place finisher gets one point.

The top 16 drivers, based on total scoring during the 26-race regular season, become eligible for the Chase for the Cup.
