According to the Mayo Clinic, egg whites should not be used in the treatment of burns because egg whites may cause infection. Butter or ointments should also not be applied to burns because of risk of infection.
According to the Mayo Clinic, ice should not be directly applied to a burn area because then the body may become too cold, causing more damage to the wound. Minor burns, including first-degree and second-degree burns, should be treated with cool running water for about 15 minutes and then covered with a sterile gauze bandage. An over-the-counter pain reliever is also recommended in the treatment of minor burns. The most serious burns, third-degree burns, require emergency medical help.
