According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, elbow bursitis is a condition in which the bursa surrounding the elbow joint fills with fluid and becomes inflamed. This causes the elbow to ache and for the patient to have limited movement.
Elbow bursitis can be caused by a number of issues, including trauma, pressure, infection or arthritis, explains the AAOS. Symptoms include swelling, pain and limited movement. If the bursa becomes infected, then the area may also appear red and feel warm.
Elbow bursitis can be treated through anti-inflammatory medications, elbow pads and antibiotics. If the condition does not get better within a few weeks, then surgery may be necessary, states the AAOS.
