Ethanol has the chemical formula CH3CH2OH and contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The compound is a volatile, flammable liquid that is also known as pure grain alcohol.
Ethanol was first discovered in the ninth century by Rhazes; however, it was not until the 12th century that ethanol was readily produced, through distillation, in order to make wine. Many centuries later in 1875, Michael Faraday synthesized ethanol for the first time, and studied the compound intensely with his colleagues. According to the Royal Society of Chemistry, the compound is used on a daily basis by most humans. Alcoholic drinks and fuel are two of the most common uses for ethanol.
