What is elf ear surgery?

Elf ear surgery is a procedure in which the ear is surgically modified to have a pointed appearance, reports ABC News. People undergo this procedure to give their ears an elfin appearance popularized in mythology, fantasy and science fiction.

Inspired by movies such as "Lord of the Rings" and characters such as "Star Trek's" Mr. Spock, the procedure involves slicing the cartilage at the top of the ear and sewing it into a point, explains ABC News. The procedure is painful and usually irreversible. Possible complications include deformity of the ear and infection. Some who have undergone the procedure report that their pointed ears work more like those of animals by focusing sound better.
