For eligibility with California's Employment Development Department benefits, applicants must be unable to complete their ordinary work for a period of eight days, as of 2015. Applicants must also be employed or actively seeking employment when they suffer a disability. Applicants must have lost wages due to the disability.
At least $300 of SDI deductions must be withheld from the applicant during his former work period. Applicants must also be under the care of a doctor for the first eight days of their disability and stay under care while receiving benefits from the state. Once a person becomes disabled, he must file a claim within 49 days to receive benefits.
