What is an .EMF file extension?

EMF stands for "enhanced metafile," or an enhanced windows metafile. A file with the .EMF file extension is used by the Windows operating system when printing a file.
When one file is being printed by a printer and another file is sent to the printer, the computer creates a file that resides in the system until the print jobs have been completed. The .EMF file is a 32-bit replacement for the older .WMF (Windows metafile) format. EMF files are smaller than .WMF files, which makes them more easily processed. They are also independent of device, so that graphic properties are maintained regardless of a printer's dots-per-inch property.
