Is England a country?

England is considered its own country, and is also a part of Great Britain and the United Kingdom. The capital of England is London; London also happens to be the largest city in the country. England first became recognized as a country during the 10th century.

England shares land borders with both Scotland and Wales. The country is separated from the majority of Europe by both the English Channel and the North Sea. The country of England covers over 50,000 square miles. The islands of the Isles of Scilly, and the Isle of Wight are also considered a part of England.
