Epley exercises involve turning the head 45 degrees horizontally toward the affected ear, then being tilted backward horizontally. It also involves turning the head 90 degrees toward the unaffected ear, then rolling onto the side of the unaffected ear, so that the patient is looking at the floor.
The Epley maneuver is an exercise regimen used to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. It is conducted with the assistance of a doctor or physical therapist, and usually takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete. When the head is firmly moved into different positions, calcium crystal debris that cause vertigo slip out of the semicircular canal into an area of the inner ear, where they no longer cause symptoms.
