Who is Erebus in Greek mythology?

Erebus is the primordial deity or personification of darkness and shadow in Greek mythology. One of the first generation of gods, Erebus is a child of Chaos, the nothingness from which all of existence originated. He is the great-uncle of the Olympian Greek gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades.

Erebus mated with sibling Nyx, who represents night. They produced Aither and Hemera, who respectively represented Brightness and Day. He is also considered to be the part of Hades through which the newly dead pass in order to reach the River Styx, where Charon ferries them across to reach the main part of the underworld.

The Greek poet Hesiod provides most of the known information about Erebus in his "Theogony."
