A few examples of dioecious plants include ash trees, bayberry and yew. A dioecious plant is a plant with male and female reproductive parts on separate plants. The male and female parts are known as the staminate and the pistillate, respectivley.
Dioeceous plants contrast to monoecious plants, which have male and female parts that are located on the same plant. There are fewer dioeceous plants than there are monoecious plants. Some dioeceous plants are polygamo-dioecious, meaning they have male flowers on female plants and female flowers on male plants. Dioeceous plants are more common among woody plants and heterotrophic species.
