Excessive belching can be a symptom of acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastritis or stomach ulcers, according to Mayo Clinic. Excessive belching may also be the result of a gallbladder problem or nervous habit, explains WebMD.

With acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease, repeated swallowing due to stomach acid rising up the esophagus can trigger excess belching, explains Mayo Clinic. Drinking carbonated beverages, smoking, eating or drinking too quickly, talking while eating, and chewing gum or sucking on hard candies can also cause excess belching. Though excessive belching can be a sign of various medical conditions, it is normal to burp three or four times after eating a meal, according to WebMD.
