What is Facebook?

Facebook is a social networking website created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg that lets users share information easily between friends, family or anyone they choose. Facebook was originally called thefacebook, but the name was changed in August 2005.

Facebook was first designed to allow Harvard students to get acquainted, share photos and stay in touch with each other. The site soon became extremely popular and expanded to Yale, Stanford and Columbia a month after launch, and continued to expand, eventually allowing anyone over the age of 13 to create a profile. Facebook registration requires a valid email address and a few preliminary questions.
