What factors can affect the value of used boats?

The size, age, and make and model of a boat generally determine its possible price range, but the boat's condition can cause the price to vary dramatically as well. Marine surveyors specialize in inspecting boats and determining their conditions.
Condition and value surveys cover the hull and structure of the boat, and, because structural issues can make a boat dangerous, buyers often require this survey before purchasing a boat. Insurance companies and lenders typically require these surveys as well. Engine surveys for powered boats and rigging surveys for sailboats also help determine the value of a boat; specialized experts sometimes perform these surveys separate from the condition and value survey.
