What is Family Tree DNA?

Family Tree DNA allows people to discover their lineage and identify potential relatives and ancestors through genetic testing. As of 2014, this Texas-based ancestry service offers six different DNA tests for tracing maternal, paternal and universal lineage.

Family Tree DNA's Y-chromosome DNA tests are capable of uncovering 340,000 years of paternal ancestry, while its mtDNA tests can reveal up to 180,000 years of maternal ancestry. The company also offers autosomal DNA testing, which can disclose genetic relations from the past five generations and ancestral origins. As of September 2014, Family Tree DNA has compiled more than 690,000 DNA records that are used to find genetic matches during testing.
