Should babies go to the hospital if they get diarrhea?

Babies with diarrhea may need to go to the hospital if there is blood in the stools, if the stool is black, red or white, if they are lethargic or vomiting excessively, or if they are running a fever of 102 F or above. New parents may think their baby has diarrhea, but if the child is breastfed and the stools are runny and yellow, this is normal.
The main worry with diarrhea in infants is dehydration. If the child is not nursing or taking a bottle as usual, there may not be enough fluids getting into the child's system, which can cause further complications. Parents can call the pediatrician to find out if the child needs to be seen in the office or needs to go to the hospital.
