What are some famous old Mexican coins?

Hundreds of years ago, when Mexico was a colony of Spain, coins of the official currency were the real, the peso and the escudo, which are now the most well-known old Mexican coins. In Spanish-controlled Mexico, the silver real was the national currency.

Eight reals equaled 1 peso, and 16 reals equaled 1 gold escudo. In 1863, four decades after Mexico gained its independence from Spain, the nation switched to a decimal monetary system in which 100 centavos became the new value of the peso. Coins from before this switch have a notable financial value in today's world and are sought after by collectors.
