As of 2015, physicist Stephen Hawking, former Toto bass player Mike Porcaro and former professional football player Steve Gleason all suffer from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The disease is named for famed baseball player Henry Louis "Lou" Gehrig, who succumbed to the disease in 1941.

Folk and blues musician Lead Belly, Academy Award winner David Niven, author and professor Morrie Schwartz, and jazz musician Charles Mingus also died from ALS. In the United States, about 6,400 new cases of ALS are diagnosed each year. Muscle weakness and stiffness are often early symptoms of the disease.
