The volcano Mauna Kea is famous for being the highest peak in the state of Hawaii and the highest land form in the world when measured from base to peak. Its neighbor, Mauna Loa, is only 120 feet lower.
Mauna Kea is taller than even Mount Everest, but most of it is submerged below the sea. While Everest is 29,029 feet high, Mauna Kea measures 33,100 feet from top to bottom, although only 13,796 feet of the volcano are above sea level. Next to it is Mauna Loa, an active shield volcano that last erupted in 1984. Atop Mauna Kea sit the Mauna Kea Observatories.
