How fast could the Titanic go?

The Titanic had a maximum speed capability of 23 knots. At the time the Titanic collided with the iceberg, she was traveling at a speed of 22.5 knots.
Ironically, had the Titanic continued forward and turned, she likely could have missed colliding with the iceberg, since a ship turns more quickly the greater the forward motion the ship has. Unfortunately, First Officer William Murdoch, in command of the bridge, ordered the engines set into reverse in order to perform a "port around" maneuver. The ship avoided a head-on collision but was struck by the iceberg on the starboard side. An opening of 300 feet long was gashed into the hull, through which the forward compartments began flooding with sea water.
