How fast do downhill skiers go?

Downhill skiers can reach top speeds of 75 to 95 miles per hour. The top recorded speed during a downhill competition is 96.6 miles by Austria's Klaus Kroell on the Lauberhorn course in Wengen, Switzerland.
The average speed during a typical Olympic downhill race ranges between 40 to 60 miles per hour. Friction, equipment, snow conditions and wind resistance are factors that restrict the overall speed of a skier.
Even though Klaus Kroell holds the record for fastest speed ever recorded in an event, he still finished 19th overall in his race.
Most recreational skiers travel at a speed of 10 to 20 miles per hour.
