In severe cases of liver damage – those resulting in a 50 to 60 percent loss of liver cells over just three to four days – the liver heals completely in about 30 days, according to University of Iowa Health Care experts. Whereas most organs replace damaged tissue with scar tissue, the liver is unique in that it is the only organ in the body that regenerates, replacing the tissue with completely new cells.
Overuse of acetaminophen and prolonged alcohol abuse are two of the most common causes of liver damage; others include exposure to cleaning solvents, aerosolized paints and paint thinners.
