According to National Geographic, the sailfish is the fastest fish in the sea, capable of reaching speeds of up to 68 miles per hour. The sailfish is divided into two main subspecies: the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific. Their range extends throughout the warmer, more temperate waters of the ocean.
As open-water animals, sailfish are found far from shore and live near the ocean's surface. Schools of small fish, such as anchovies and sardines, compose the bulk of their diet. Although their flesh is consumable, the sailfish is more prized for its competitive value, boasting a powerful body and reaching lengths of more than 10 feet and weighing over 200 pounds.
