Theophrastus Phillipus Auroleus Bombastus von Hohenheim, also known as Paracelsus, is considered the father of toxicology. He is credited for the famous toxicological phrase: "All things are poison and nothing is without poison; only the dose makes a thing not a poison." He lived from 1493 to 1541.

In 1813, Mathieu Orfila produced the first formal text on toxicology. For this, he is considered the modern father of toxicology. Toxicology is the study of chemicals and what effect those chemicals have on the human body. Toxicologists are interested in understanding causes, symptoms and treatments to poisons as they enter the body.
