The IRS Form 1040 is a document used by individual taxpayers in the United States to file their annual federal income tax returns, according to TurboTax. The form includes areas for filers to include their personal and family information, income, deductions, and exemptions.
Taxpayers must use Form 1040 instead of the shorter Forms 1040EZ and 1040A if they meet certain qualifications such as owing household employment taxes, if they choose to itemize deductions, if self-employment earnings are declared, or if a household income is more than $100,000, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS offers Form 1040 in PDF format at IRS.gov, and electronic filing can also be used to complete the form.
